The Alert
A member newsletter on coal, landfills, and data centers, designed so dense policy reads in minutes.
In progress · Fall 2026 issue
The Alert goes to members across Missouri, and this issue was heavy: coal and gas, agrisolar, a new data center law, and 29 abandoned landfills. Most of it was long-form policy writing, full of numbers, citations, and legislation.
The challenge was to make dense policy feel worth reading, so members could scan an issue in minutes and still find the details when they wanted them.
I treated the data as design. On the opening spread, Missouri's energy sources are stacked in type sized by their share of the grid: coal on top, renewables at the bottom. The problem, measured in letters.
Inside, a consistent type system, big pull-stats, myth-vs-fact panels, and "MCE's Position" callouts break up the long articles. Readers can skim the headlines and still get the argument.
